Hitchhiking and picking up hitchhikers was a normal thing in the 70’s

 

Yes, one day driving on a warm day, in a very rural area I saw a heavy set older black lady walking and stopped and asked if she wanted a ride. We were at least 6 or 7 miles from anyplace that I expected she wanted to go to.
