Over 1,000 DNC delegates voted against party platform, in sign of Dem discord
DNC didn't release platform vote until after convention ended
By Paul Steinhauser | Fox News
With a common goal of booting President Trump from the White House in November’s general election, the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party mostly presented an image of unity last week at their nominating convention.

But there was one moment during the four-day Democratic National Convention where progressives protested in large numbers – over the party’s platform.

While it’s described as the most progressive platform in the Democratic Party’s history and pushes the party to left on many issues -- including health care reform, combating climate change, trade deals, and fighting racial injustice -- the 92-page document doesn’t specifically endorse "Medicare-for-all" or the Green New Deal, two of the top proposals pushed by the party’s progressive wing.

Democratic National Committee (DNC) officials announced last Tuesday that the platform was passed by convention delegates and adopted. But despite inquiries by Fox News and other news organizations, they didn’t release the roll-call vote on the platform for days.

The tally is now out -- and reflects a major divide among delegates.

The DNC revealed over the weekend that 3,562 delegates voted to approve the platform, while a total of 1,069 voted no, and 87 abstained.

The number of convention delegates who voted no is roughly the same as the number of delegates pledged to progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. The populist lawmaker and "Medicare-for-all" champion was the last remaining rival to Democratic nominee Joe Biden in the primaries before suspending his White House bid and endorsing the former vice president in April.

Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., right, greet one another before they participate in a Democratic presidential primary debate at CNN Studios in Washington. Sanders said Tuesday that it would be “irresponsible” for his loyalists not to support Joe Biden, warning that progressives who “sit on their hands” in the months ahead would simply enable President Donald Trump’s reelection (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

Party officials apparently released the vote totals after pressure from Sanders delegates.

“We were upset. There was pushback. There were emails and phone calls,” a Sanders convention delegate told Fox News.

The delegate, who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely, emphasized that the DNC “should have released the vote during the convention.”

The 2020 platform had its genesis in the six policy task forces set up this spring by Biden and Sanders. While Sanders said he would support the final platform document, hundreds of his convention delegates announced before the convention that they would vote against the platform as part of a symbolic protest.

Two of them included high-profile members of Congress.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, a member of the quartet of first-term progressive congresswomen of color known as The Squad, touted days before the convention that she voted against the party platform, tweeting that “as a party, we must push for a future where every resident has the ability to thrive. That means we need a platform that works to rid our society of oppression and greed. Unfortunately, in my view this platform does not do enough.”

And progressive Rep. Ro Khanna of California, who was a Sanders campaign national co-chair, also voted against the platform.

“The premise of our nation is every person has dignity,” Khanna told Fox News on Tuesday. “Our health care should not depend on what job you have or whether you are employed. During this pandemic, we need to commit to extending Medicare to every American. This has been part of our platform since 1980 and should be part of it again.”

Fox News reached out to the Biden campaign for reaction to the platform vote protest, but they declined to comment.

Trump campaign deputy press secretary Ken Farnaso argued that “Biden has already embraced socialism and it’s still not enough for the left-wing extremists in his party. This week, Americans will witness a unified Republican Party standing alongside President Trump’s America First agenda. The choice couldn’t be more clear this November."

Four years ago, there was no roll-call vote on the Democrats' party platform. The adoption of the platform came through a voice vote by the Democratic delegates during a convention that was held in Philadelphia’s professional basketball and hockey arena. But the 2016 Democratic convention was rocked by numerous protests by Sanders delegates and supporters, after the senator narrowly lost the nomination race to Hillary Clinton during his first White House run. Many Sanders delegates thought the primary race was rigged in favor of Clinton.

There were no similar protests four years later. But due to health concerns over large crowds amid the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Democratic convention was a nearly virtual confab, which prevented a traditional voice vote on the platform. Instead, delegates voted over a series of weeks, filling out ballots that were collected by state party chairs and sent to national party officials. The ballots were counted all at once, two days before the start of last week’s convention.

There won’t be similar drama regarding the platform at this week’s Republican National Convention. As Fox News reported in June, the delegates convening in Charlotte for Monday’s abbreviated session were not voting on a 2020 party platform or even re-adopting the 2016 platform. Since there’s no convening of a platform committee, the 2016 platform will remain in effect.

In a statement Sunday, the Republican National Committee announced that instead of unveiling a new platform, the party will "continue to enthusiastically support the President's America-first agenda."

The Trump campaign on Sunday released a brief list of President Trump’s second-term priorities. The release – titled “Fighting For You” – among other things focused on tackling COVID-19, defending the police, education, illegal immigration and workers rights, health care, relations with China, and an America First foreign policy.

Talk about copy and paste. First the RNC copied and pasted their 2016 platform and from everything I'm seeing they are trying to copy and paste the Democratic National Convention. But doing a very poor imitation of it.

Very hopeful for us progressive/liberal/Democrats. And ooh I bet this hurts Trump's snowflake ego. You know he's all about ratings.

Donald Trump loses the convention ratings battle on first night

*Now that could actually be even worse news. Fox cut off a bunch of the first night and Hannity only had the video running while he talked over the speakers. So maybe a lot of those people were tuning into Fox just to try and get away from the first night of the RNC.

Democrat Mayor: Joe Biden ‘Too Weak, Too Scared, Too Sleepy to Stand Up to the Radical Left’
    231
    HANNAH BLEAU 25 Aug 2020

Robert Vlaisavljevich, a lifelong Democrat and mayor of Eveleth, Minnesota, blasted “weak,” “scared,” and “sleepy” Joe Biden (D) for failing to stand up to “radicals like AOC,” instead allowing them to craft his environmental policy like the Green New Deal, which he described as a “job-killing disgrace dreamt up by people who don’t live in the real world.”

“My father and grandfather earned their livings mining the raw materials that made the steel that built America,” he said, stressing that the election is “make or break” for workers who are carrying on the legacy of men like them.

The Iron Range economy, he explained, is vulnerable to economic trends and foreign trade and needs a strong, stern voice in the nation’s capital. Workers long looked to Democrats to “fill that void” because they “actually thought they cared about our welfare.”

But, according to Vlaisavljevich, that is far from reality.

“Not anymore. The radical environmental movement has dragged the Democratic Party so far to the left, they can no longer claim to be advocates of the working man,” he said. ” This is hard for me to say because I am a lifelong Democrat.”

He criticized lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for allowing America to be ripped off by trading partners, particularly China, which “dumped steel into our markets and slapped tariffs on our products.”

“And what did so-called leaders like Joe Biden do?” he asked. “Nothing.”

The cost of the inaction was devasting — the loss of both hope and thousands of jobs, as well as a “generation of young people who had to leave the Iron Range to find a livelihood.” That changed when Trump came on the scene and promised to champion the American worker by standing up to China, he continued. Because of the fulfillment of Trump’s promises — slashing taxes, delivering American First trade deals, and rolling back regulations — the Iron Range is “roaring back to life.”

That could be lost, however, if Biden gets into office, Vlaisavljevich warned, blasting Biden’s decades-long political career and his decision to cower to the radical left.

“Joe has allowed radicals like AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] to craft his environment policies. Their so-called Green New Deal is a job-killing disgrace dreamt up by people who don’t live in the real world,” he said, calling Biden “too weak, too scared, and too sleepy to stand up to the radical left.”

“He has been doing nothing in Washington for 47 years. Why would year 48 be any different? President Trump won’t back down to anybody,” the mayor said, praising the president for delivering a strong economy and predicting that he will “do it again” for the country.

The Iron Range’s economic future and survival — and America’s — is at stake this election, but voters can count on Trump, Vlaisavljevich added.

This is what presidents are supposed to do. And once again Joe Biden proves he's the one who knows what to do and how to do it. While Trump blusters and pours more gas on the fire.

And something else that has been just amazingly consistent. The Trump Campaign has already spent a billion fucking dollars. They have been raising money since the day Trump took office. And he's got the absolute best people he can hire at least. And yet Biden and his campaign consistently beat Trump to the punch on everything from policy to the pandemic to current events.

I would also assess this is actually beyond my hopes for a meaningful and powerful response in all possible ways.

Joe Biden Condemns ‘Needless Violence’ in Kenosha After 3 Days of Riots

Former Vice President Joe Biden offered his first direct condemnation of violence and rioting in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Wednesday afternoon — three days after the unrest began, and two days after he condemned police for “systemic racism.”

As Breitbart News reported earlier Wednesday, neither Biden nor running mate Kamala Harris had condemned the riots personally:

On Sunday, Jacob Blake, 29, was shot and wounded by police in Kenosha during a confrontation. It is not clear whether he was armed or not; he is reportedly paralyzed from the waist down, though it is not yet clear if that injury will be permanent.

Protests erupted that evening, accompanied by rioting, looting, and arson. Biden issued a statement Monday blaming the shooting on “systemic racism,” and said nothing about the riots. His statement also left out key details about the shooting.

That night, riots returned — and were even worse, with several businesses burnt to the ground in Kenosha, including the Danish Brotherhood Lodge, a local community charity. A man who attempted to defend the building was brutally attacked.

On Tuesday, a Biden adviser issued a brief statement condemning the violence, referring to remarks Biden made in June condemning violence. That statement, however, appeared to blame police for riots, saying that they “escalate tension.”

The violence continued on Tuesday evening, with more looting and confrontation between armed groups. Some of those armed appeared to be defending private property, but the motivations of those involved in the shootings remain unconfirmed.

Supporters of the vice president’s campaign grew increasingly concerned about his silence. “Never Trump” Republican John Kasich appeared on CNN Wednesday morning and argued vehemently that Biden needed to address the shootings.

Biden tweeted a video in which he expressed outrage again at Blake’s shooting, then condemned “needless violence”:

Somebody finally told Joe to condemn (too hard a word for Joe, who basically just said it was wrong).

It's not just about 3 days into Kenosha - this is the 'negative' first thing he said about the violence since it started months ago.

I literally laugh thinking about the phony "Walk Away Movement" the PR hacks and Trump supporters were trying to push around here not long ago. It was supposed to be about Democrats walking away from the party to support Trump. Because first of all it was straight up Russian propaganda. It was an invention. But more importantly they really had to scrounge to find examples of it. While in reality Republicans not only walking away from Trump but actively forming multiple groups to defeat him is unprecedented. And a real movement.

Pelosi says Biden shouldn't debate Trump: 'I wouldn't legitimize a conversation with him'
House speaker says Trump would 'belittle' the presidential debates

By Marisa Schultz | Fox News

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Joe Biden shouldn't debate President Trump.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested Thursday that former Vice President Joe Biden cancel his three scheduled debates with President Trump because the commander-in-chief would "belittle" the forum and engage in "skullduggery."

"I don't think that there should be any debates," Pelosi said out of the blue at a news conference at the Capitol, saying she doesn't want the debates to be "an exercise in skullduggery."

"I wouldn't legitimize a conversation with him, nor a debate in terms of the presidency of the United States. Now I know that the Biden campaign thinks in a different way about this."

Pelosi is the latest high-profile Democrat to offer a major piece of advice to the former vice president. Earlier this week, former 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton said Biden shouldn't concede the race under any circumstances.

Republicans said Pelosi's remarks were another sign that Democrats are trying to hide Biden.

Michael Ahrens, communications director for the Republican National Committee, said Democrats are advising Biden to not debate, not to leave the basement and not to concede. "Odd way to project confidence in your nominee," he tweeted.

Debates have been an issue of contention for weeks as the Trump campaign has pushed for an additional early debate to coincide with early voting that will be underway in states. And the idea of abandoning debates all together made headlines after a New York Times op-ed earlier this August argued that presidential debates should be "scrapped," with critics suggesting that it's the latest effort by the media to prevent Biden from debating Trump.

Pelosi made the comment at her weekly news conference, unprompted, and her advice was not in response to a question about debates. She cited Trump's "disgraceful" performance at the 2016 debate when he was "stalking" Clinton as one reason Biden should break tradition and sit out the debates.

"So I think that he'll probably act in a way that is beneath the dignity of the presidency; he does that every day," Pelosi said. "But I think it will also belittle what the debates are supposed to be about. And they're not to be about skullduggery on the part of somebody who has no respect for the office he holds, much less the democratic process.

"Why else would he try to undermine the elections in the manner in which he is doing?" Pelosi continued. "So, if Joe Biden asked me what I thought about it, [I'd say] I don't think that he should dignify that conversation with Donald Trump."

Shortly after Pelosi's comments, the Biden campaign responded that while they agree with the speaker's characterization of Trump, Biden will go through with the debates as planned.

“We certainly agree with Speaker Pelosi on her views of the President's behavior," Biden campaign spokesperson Andrew Bates said. "But just as she has powerfully confronted that behavior in the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room, Joe Biden looks forward to doing the same on the debate stage."

The Biden campaign already agreed in June to three debates in September and October in a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates, in addition to a vice-presidential debate.

Biden overlooks Ferguson in claiming no 'racial riots,' National Guard under Obama

By Ronn Blitzer | Fox News

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden accused President Trump of being part of the problem Thursday as violence, unrest and racial tension remain prevalent across the country.

In an interview with MSNBC, the former vice president compared the state of the country during President Obama’s second term with Trump's first, but appeared to overlook multiple major events that took place during the Obama-Biden administration.

"For the last four years we weren't having riots, racial riots," he said of his second term with Obama. "When they occurred, we didn't have to call in the National Guard."

Biden appeared to overlook high-profile instances of violent protests and unrest across the country, including in Ferguson, Mo., following the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown. As violence overtook the St. Louis suburb, Gov. Jay Nixon did indeed call in the National Guard.

"Tonight, a day of hope, prayers, and peaceful protests was marred by the violent criminal acts of an organized and growing number of individuals, many from outside the community and state, whose actions are putting the residents and businesses of Ferguson at risk," Nixon said in an August 2014 statement describing events very similar to how the Trump administration has characterized recent violence in the U.S. "I am directing the highly capable men and women of the Missouri National Guard to assist ... in restoring peace and order to this community."

That November, the National Guard was posted again when violence broke out after a grand jury voted not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for Brown's death. After the decision, violent protests also broke out in Oakland, where dozens were arrested.

Then in April 2015, the city of Baltimore experienced nights of rioting, looting and arson in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray, 25, in police custody. The Maryland National Guard was called up, the first time for a civil disturbance in the state since 1968. A nightly curfew was imposed, and more than 200 people were arrested.

And in September 2016, protests in Charlotte, N.C., over the death of Keith Lamont Scott, 43, turned violent. North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency and called in the National Guard after Charlotte's police chief said he needed the help.

Biden made his remarks in response to reported excerpts of the speech President Trump is expected to deliver Thursday night at the Republican National Convention.

"We have spent the last four years reversing the damage Joe Biden inflicted over the last 47 years," Trump is expected to say. "At the Democrat convention, you barely heard a word about their agenda. But that's not because they don't have one. It's because their agenda is the most extreme set of proposals ever put forward by a major party nominee."
