It was a day of celebration as award-winning American multidisciplinary artist and textile surface designer Malene Barnett welcomed design enthusiasts to her book signing for Crafted Kinship at Locale in Kingston on Saturday, February 1.
The book features 60 artists from the Caribbean sharing their stories and their catalogue of ceramics and textiles, proudly representing the region’s talent and heritage. Barnett, who is of Jamaican and Vincentian heritage, said that it was important not only for the culture to be properly represented in the artists’ stories and work, but also preserved for future generations.
“I thought it was important for me to contribute to the archive because part of my practice is to re-imagine black archives,” Barnett said. “So this book is the beginning of a conversation and an object that will be in our archive forever.”
