In my opinion, a good way to make friends here is to follow a few simple rules/guidelines:

• Be nice to everybody.
• Read entire threads before you comment to avoid looking like an idiot.
• Keep trying. Imagine it's high school. If you're the new kid, you're going to take a while to make friends and fit in. You sort of have to prove yourself first. Read enough threads to find posters who you feel you can asociate with and talk to them - not to a group at large, which is daunting.
• Don't get into fights with members who have bigger friends than you do, unless you have a really thick skin.
• Don't jump into the middle of fights unless you actually know what's REALLY going on.
• Don't try to break the rules and then be pissed off because you got caught out and people lose respect for you.
• Sometimes there's more behind the scenes than what you think. It's not always obvious who the real 'villian' is. Be careful that you don't alienate the wrong people for no reason.

It's unfortunately so that in order to fit in, you have to stand out a little. Yes, it takes a while to find a spot where you're comfortable, but it can be done. We all had to muddle through it. Just be honest and be yourself. Not everybody will like you, but not everybody will hate you either.

Just remember that you have to earn a reputation. When you just join, nobody knows anything about you. Nobody knows what sort of person you are. They'll get to know you if you post often, and judge you by the content of what you post.

Just have fun. That's really all I can say.

The problem with the story section is other writers socks, trolls and general ignorance. If it truly was a place where writers critiqued others writers work in a constructive manner, and true honest readers gave their view it might be worth something . Unfortunately the current place isn't worth a wank, literally.

 

You're about the only one who took that 'spanner' seriously. My only advice for you is to move on like everybody else did.

 

Even a year ago, the readership on here was a LOT more than it is now. On the story section, it has been destroyed by the trolls and the owners obviously have zero intention of rectifying it. Shame

I remember the day's when gd and games were one section of the forum. Banter seemed to be a lot better then. But the powers that be elected to separate the two and then the gd elite evolved. Only thing is they are the only people who take the shit they spout seriously. To me it started the downfall of this place and I miss what it once was.

I agree with most of what you have to say, but I don't know about the finding a place part. I just kind of roam around the forum.

 

It's like that on almost every type of message board or forum on the internet so don't get offended or think the "clique" mentality is specific to this one. Just keep posting and eventually you will get recognized as a "regular". Some people reply to almost everything and end up with 10's of thousands of posts. Others like me don't post as much but read a lot of them. I really don't think I am considered a "regular" since I don't reply much but in general I have been a member of the forum longer than 90+% of those replying to threads.

 

Maybe its just me... but I've never felt unwelcomed here, or on other sites I am now or have been on previously, with one exception of a forum I did not want to be on and shouldn't have been on anyway a long long time ago.

I have seen people being rude, but I can usually see why they may have reacted that way, but then again there's some people that just have a stick up their ass some days.

Or maybe I fail at the internet since I've yet to be berated.
